Student Input: Why Don't We Seek It?
While looking through Virginia's discipline policies I looked through a list of suggested members of a "stakeholders’ committee to discuss the management of student behavior". On the list was students. I KNOW that in my school we do not seek student input and it made me wonder why. Doing various activities in class I know that my more responsible students have very valid and interesting thoughts on student discipline. Even the students that aren't as responsible tend to have similar thoughts. So why don't we listen to them? Do you think students should have a say when it comes to the management of student behavior? Do you think they would be more likely to follow the rules if they helped create them?

DES has a great system, but I don't believe that there are students on their ESD (effective, school-wide discipline) team, which meets monthly. I will ask the principal if she includes students.
I think there is this fear that children will "take the easy way out" if we give them a choice in discipline. You pose a great question Julie. I think there is validity in finding ways to involve students more in the discipline process. We have been encouraged to work with our students in the beginning of the year as part of our discipline plan, but why does it need to stop there. Perhaps we could use "student leaders" as a part of a discipline committee process.
